The Many Benefits of Smiling

Read about our staff

I know I’ve talked about the power of a smile before, but it is time to revisit the many benefits of a simple smile.

There have actually been scientific studies on the benefits of smiling and I’m going to share them today.

But right now, do something for me… SMILE!

Now don’t you feel better?

Be Well,
Anisa

Improve Mood…

Your smile does more than convey a happy feeling…the physical act of smiling actually influences mood. It can transform feelings and release serotonin, dopamine and endorphins into your bloodstream.

Reduce Stress…

Research has show than smiling big can reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, boost your immune system and increase stress recovery.

Retrain Your Brain…

Our brains naturally think in terms of defense mechanisms (think “fight or flight”) but when we smile habitually it creates positive brain space…so we feel happiness and more positive for longer periods of time.

Reduces Pain…

Research shows smiling reduces pain. Again, the act of smiling releases dopamine, endorphins and serotonin into your body.

Strengthens Body on a Cellular Level…

Our thoughts have an impact on our cell function. In Her book, Secrets of Your Cells, biochemist and artist Sondra Barrett outlines how smiling reduces the rigidness of our cells and this may help combat stress-induced cell mutations which lead to the development of various cancers. Find her book here.

Helps Other People…

Smiling is contagious. Our brains are wired to be social and smiles are most often reciprocated. So…others will benefit from all of the wonderful things a smile can do.

Makes Us Approachable and Trustworthy…

Part of living our best life is having quality relationships with other people.

Makes Us Attractive to Others…

Research has shown that we find smiling people more physically attractive than non-smilers.

You may not be a “natural” smiler, but there are things you can do to get into the habit of it.

In Closing…

I read a trick on training yourself to smile is to SMILE every time you are at a traffic light.

Even fake smiles have benefits, however research has shown that smiling BIG, up to your eyes, has the greatest physical and psychological impact.

So give it a try… Smile right now and know I’m smiling back.
